That last row is worth sitting with, because it's one of the more common ways a workload fix looks real on paper while doing nothing structurally. A policy that changes the label on hours without changing the underlying deadline math leaves the actual mismatch untouched, no matter how generous the policy sounds in an offer letter.

When cutting hours actually does work

None of this argues that reducing hours is useless. It argues that it only works under a specific condition: the scope of work has to shrink along with the hours, not just the window it's crammed into. A genuine four-day week where the fifth day's work is removed, reassigned, or simply not expected, addresses the workload area directly and can meaningfully ease energy depletion. Why hours become the default fix anyway

  5. Treat 'I cut my hours and it didn't help' as useful diagnostic information, not proof that nothing helps. It's evidence the actual mismatch was in one of the other five areas, which at least narrows down where to look next

Fewer hours is a real lever on a real dimension. It just isn't the only lever, and it isn't attached to two of the three symptoms the actual clinical model describes. Treating it as the universal fix is why so many people who've genuinely tried it still end up back at the same three symptoms a few months later, wondering what they did wrong. Usually, nothing — they just pulled the one lever the model was never going to move on its own.

The version of this worth remembering isn't 'hours don't matter.' It's 'hours are one input to one of six areas, and the other five don't respond to a calendar change at all.'
